Life is Nothing Personal:

The View from the Soul

CHAPTER 4

Metaphysician Heal Thyself

The very word, heal, assumes that something about the expression of spirit can be wrong. It is based on a belief in imperfection, a belief based solely on fear. Admittedly, it is a firmly entrenched belief that will be difficult to shake. We can explore it nonetheless. Then, perhaps, a practical application of new principle can be attempted.

It is easy to forget that every physical expression begins in spirit. The inspiration becomes idea, takes on energy and feeling and finally condenses into matter. The more interactive the expression, a human body, for instance, as opposed to a rock, the more complex the expression of spirit into form will appear. Even so, it remains an expression. As words of love do not fully capture the feelings they attempt to express, neither does physical matter fully express the spirit from which it springs. Simply put, spirit is always larger than whatever expresses it. The wholeness of any physical manifestation, be it words, song or a human being, is always far more unseen than seen, more non-physical than physical. The complete perfection of every manifestation is always present in the moment even though most of it is unseen.

Now, let's give credit where it is due. Your concept of intelligence, like your concept of perfection, is very small. To say that any manifestation of God is incorrect or without sense merely because you don't understand it in its fullness is the height of arrogance. It may well be the best judgement you can exercise in the moment but... From the perspective of spirit, every manifestation is whole and without flaw. Each is intimately connected through its spiritual aspect to the rest of creation, an extension of God.

The first step in "healing" then, is to accept the rightness of whatever is. See it in its perfection, pain and all. Embrace it whole-heartedly. Only by embracing it can you release it. Resistance, as we have discussed, is at the core of your experience of pain. Acceptance causes the redefining of experience and allows for happiness and fulfilment. Of course, such an approach does require you to co-exist with your own ignorance. We are aware of how difficult that can be. We hope that you can offer yourself compassion for not knowing everything right now. Within that experience of compassion lay the awareness you will need to understand what is more fully.

The next step in "healing" is to fully experience what is. Do not hide from or block out or medicate away the pain of your experience. Instead, enter it trustingly and open yourself to it. Remember that pain is simply intense sensation which is being resisted. Let yourself be fully immersed in the sensation. Nothing else matters in the moment. Be with it. Ask it questions and listen to the answers with an open heart and mind. You can judge it all later. You can medicate the pain away later. It is unlikely that a physically manifested imbalance will be resolved in a flash of insight anyway, so be patient and allow the unseen aspects of it to come to your awareness over time. Expect to follow this step a few times before the full experience of the wholeness of your condition becomes available. Still, the parts will come to the surface right from the start. No source of physical pain is as simple as it might seem. Even a stubbed toe or a pricked finger has a rich and complex history of mental and emotional imbalance before it occurs in the physical. Still, all pains will reveal their sources if you create the space for those sources to be heard.

We can assure you that most sources of physical pain have the potential to shake up your concept of who you are if you actually go seeking to experience the wholeness of them. Within the chronic ailments, the most life altering awareness can be attained. Merely acknowledging the opportunity that such ailments represent will go a long ways toward their resolution. Resolution it will be too. Each experience of life, illness included, is a dynamic process created and infused by the flow of spirit into thought, feeling and matter. This flow is not linear but cyclic or more accurately in three dimensional terms, a spiral. Obviously, as you add dimensions, the imagery gets more complex. At any point, though, the geometry can get out of balance and begin to wobble in its motion. That wobble sends ripples throughout the manifestation. All of your being is affected by such imbalance and the movement back to balance produces pain sometimes.

************************************************

Let's take, for example, our friend here. He loves it so when we use him as an example. He finds himself presently in an intense love relationship. It challenges him to accept more love and kindness and generosity then he has been taught by life to believe that he deserves. As he scrambles to embrace a new definition of himself that includes being so loved, he has kicked up an issue of dependency, deeply rooted in childhood which has thrown him for a loop. Much of his growth into adulthood (manhood) has been marked by a burgeoning self-reliance and self- determination. Being in control not only fulfilled his definition of masculinity, but also his definition of an adult human being. Anyone in his life who gave up control to him in even meagre ways was not an adult in his eyes and he treated them parentally. This was not an easy thing for his first wife to live with.

Now, faced with a growing dependence on the love offered him by his new wife, his self-concept is wobbling madly. A lifetime of growing self-determination, culminating in 5 years of living as a bachelor is now under fire. Who is this new person, being taken care of by such a capable, affluent and loving (and here is the kicker) woman? The result of this major change in his life, stomach distress, more specifically chronic heartburn. How ironic! Faced with being loved beyond his capacity to endure, based on his self-concept, his resistance burns his heart. His body is metaphorically portraying, like dream imagery, the effects of his resistance to what is. It spews acid (anger) from stomach (solar plexus, the seat of personal power) to throat (centre of expressiveness and the desire to know and speak the truth). Every time an experience which affects his ability to control his own destiny comes up, so does his stomach acid. It is easy to see how this would come to be a chronic condition which might begin to defy any links to specific life circumstances by virtue of its almost constant nature. After all, nearly every occurrence can have repercussions for the sense of self-control.

Our friend here has taken a circuitous route through his "healing" journey. It has become an opportunity to inculcate his ideology into a more concrete definition of his perceived reality. By embracing his condition as a meaningful expression of his wholeness, he has been able to begin looking for where in his self-definitions the imbalance is occurring. His first glimpse was in the physical where he could see that his diet and level of exercise were out of whack. He had been eating too much and doing too little for much of the year previous. He began there and found that a change in those habits was more difficult than expected. Perhaps those habits were a symptom and not a cause? So, he looked next at his emotional experience. Here, his skills of discrimination are not as sharp as on the physical level and so it was a more lengthy process of focusing on the imbalances. Each layer of feeling that he experienced as tied to his pain would take time and attention to explore. Meanwhile, the condition continued with periods of easing and periods of worsening. It was the latter experience that made the issue of control most obvious.

Travelling with his new wife to visit her family many miles away, in her brand new car and basically on her money, might this be a recipe for control issues? There is nothing like a change of scene to bring your issues to the surface. As he pushed his wife's grandson around a shopping mall, waiting for her to emerge from whatever store had captured her interest for well over an hour, his pain approached its pinnacle and remained there for the rest of the day. He simply could not remain obtuse enough to miss the connection this time. He began to speak up. He realized that this process had already begun (speaking up) but now he was aware of the purposefulness of it. He also became aware that it helped him immensely to relieve the pressure emotionally and physically. As his feelings came to the fore, he expressed them and the pain began to ease. Still, the full depth of the issues was not apparent but definite progress was being made. The most amazing thing began to be apparent. He had been remarkably unaware of a significant portion of his emotional set until he began to express his feelings as they came up. Even after years of self-exploration, so much of his feelings remained hidden to him until pain forced them to the surface. For instance, he had no idea until we, just this morning, mentioned it that his present condition is connected to emotions rooted in his childhood, feelings of separation from his mother. In order to accept his growing feelings of dependency with his new wife, he must reconcile his break from his mother and then will he release the attendant anger and grief which fuels the heart burn.

************************************************

So you see, illness holds within itself the wholeness that includes health. It is not an imperfection. It is just another life experience designed to expand awareness. Look back now to our discussion about primal intent for it is there where the healing journey begins. The outbreak of physical illness is not the beginning of this journey. Indeed, it is more like the midpoint. The flow of intent from the spiritual core of your being is the beginning and end of all experience. Illness is no exception. Your soul, in its quest for self awareness, seeks to experience itself through your physical, emotional and mental life. Because you experience life linearly, the flow of intent appears to be constant, sparking one moment after another of life experience. Because of your judgement and the limited definitions that you place onto life itself, you often throw up barriers to this flow of life force. You simply do not trust your own soul. That is why you do not know your own soul, its contours, its power to create or its intentions for your life. The fact that you are physically manifest in the first place is a symptom of your spiritual malaise, distrusting your own spiritual essence. From this distrust comes the fear which has slowed your field of being to the point of becoming manifest into physicality. Your resistance to your soul's thrust into expression sets your field of being to wobbling. This wobbling is, even in its most subtle form, what you would term illness or dis-ease. Healing, as you refer to it, must take place on all levels if it is to take place at all. Your resistance to healing is, in itself, an issue with which you will eventually deal

.

We have suggested going directly to the source, your primal intent and seeing that your present experience is purposeful, meaningful and perfect just as it is. This is both the first step and the last, just as this level of awareness is both beginning and end to the healing journey. Only by beginning here, with the rightness of your experience, can you accept the responsibility for its cause and its cure. Only from ownership of the "problem" can you commence the implementation of the "solution." The main ingredient in the powerful medicine of healing is love. It is seen in the acceptance of pain, the treatment of the symptoms, the understanding of the fears and resistance which disrupt the creative flow powering the process of expanding awareness. Every stage at which love is offered to the dis-ease adds to the resolution of the internal imbalance that the dis-ease expresses. Keep in mind that no greater love exists than the love, trust, total awareness and unbridled expression of one's own soul. Love offered by another is merely a reflection of the love you are willing to offer yourself.

On all levels, pain is a cry for attention. Give it the attention it craves. The more love that goes along with that attention, the better. If you have a personal physician who is cold and detached and scientific in their approach to healing, you might consider an adjustment. The scientific model of the human body as a machine no longer fits your world view. Find someone who is loving and compassionate and dedicated to helping you, the patient and not merely treating bodies. Also on the physical level, offer your body whatever you presently believe to be good for its optimum health. If you resist that, and you might, look carefully at the reasons that you give yourself for ignoring your own beliefs about health matters. Choose those lifestyle matters that offer love to your body, good food, exercise and proper rest, whatever way you define those things. Offer your body affection, comfort and pleasure, self applied as well as through others. Seek massage, soothing baths, aromas, textures and touches. Ask as directly as you can for the love you need to heal.

On the emotional level, become as transparent as you can. Express who you really are and what you really feel and refuse to be intimidated by the potential rejection of others. Choose too, to be with people who will accept your expression. This choice reflects your self-love also. These may not be the people you want to be loved by. Choose those who actually do love and accept you as you are. Most important of all though, is to not censor your self to yourself. Be willing to really hear what your emotional impulses are telling you. Accept your fears as valid and real experiences on their own so that you can then work with them. They will lead you deeper to the truth of yourself. That is the entire purpose of dis-ease in the first place.

As your emotional impulses begin to point to your fears and resistance, you can begin to see what ideas you have held that are in conflict with your fundamental desire to know your self. As it is with our friend here. His definition of himself as a man has included the social stereotype of independent, self-determining and in control. A life circumstance which threatens that definition, like being even temporarily dependent, throws a monkey wrench into the creative flow of life force through him. A new definition is necessary for healing to take place. For him, a definition of manliness which affords room for more whole humanness is in order. An awareness too, that control never has been the purview of his limited ego consciousness, is in order now. The control for life's experience lies solely in the charge of deeper aspects of the self. There, the primary agenda is for the whole self to be known. Accepting this new definition will fulfill this agenda nicely and so, the illness meets its purpose for being and healing is complete.

To ferret out your own issues, we might suggest a working knowledge of Chakra theory. Such study bridges the physical with the spiritual, tying together thought and feeling associated with the flow of both. Such study reveals the issues connected to their manifestation in the physical body. Thus, the body's pain will lead you to the fears and conflicting definitions of self involved. Such a study is an act of love carried out on the mental level. Another example would be studying the disease you suffer from, from a more conventional standpoint. Look in medical texts and journals. Engage many practitioners in discussion about your condition. Become more knowledgable about yourself medically and again, your internal agenda (self awareness) is enacted. Still and all, your willingness to look honestly and carefully at your own internal conversation is most crucial to this journey.

At any step along the way, you can look at the process as one of forgiveness. Wherever the fear might lay which inspires your resistance to your own soul, your healing efforts constitute acts of contrition. They enact a desire to forgive yourself for trying to hold back the flow of life. Such forgiveness of self is at the root of all healing. Healing is based upon an inner realization that all things unfold in perfection, that your natural state of being, even physical being, is perfection, vitality and health.

We have a reminder of the most basic sort. All things in the universe, past, present and future, are of God. All existence is constructed of the Body of God. Even nothingness is included in the omniscience, omnipotence and the omnipresence of God. There is no need to fear that who you are is unloved of God or in any way imperfect. You are made entirely out of God stuff, body, feelings, thoughts and spirit. You are always existing in wholeness and thus ever expressing perfection. All other treatises from this source are based upon this foundation.

The perception that something or someone needs to be healed springs simply from the obvious "fact" that the wholeness of any portion of creation quite precisely cannot be manifested into the limited realm of three dimensions. The spiritual, mental and emotional portions of its wholeness are mainly invisible. To judge a manifestation as imperfect proves that the perceiver is missing the wholeness of the perceived. Thus the perception of imperfection says far more about the perceiver than about the perceived. In order to find the wholeness in all expression, the belief in the spiritual aspects of physical reality must be established and remembered and worked with consciously. This "Catch 22" is not the example of cause and effect that it may seem to be though. The potential new perception of reality which affords the next step in your evolution will always be brought to your attention in a timely fashion. You will often be quite resistant to it at first as resistance to change, even in thoughts and ideas, is a function of physicality itself. By practising liberation as we have suggested, you can identify and step through your pockets of resistance to speed up the growth process. Your heart will lead you through the truths that are right for you in the present. Having the courage to follow those truths that your heart sings to, even before they are fully formed, is a rare and precious gift. New and more profound truths will open up as you go along. We remind you of your fundamental safety and encourage you to boldly step into the unknown at every turn.

As you contemplate the infinite, it becomes clearer that each experience of life is connected to the whole of your life. It sends lines or tendrils or currents of your being outward to the past and future to touch thoughts, feelings and actions which resonate to your present state of being by virtue of their similarity on a variety of levels. Your response to the angry words of another will be affected by your experience for instance, from myriad portions of your being, in your physical life and otherwise, from past and future, from dream life and aspiration. Indeed, each experience is infinitely large. You certainly can come to be aware of this largeness in every moment. By so doing, you experience the height of loving acceptance. Bliss, in other words

.

Bringing this discussion back to your daily life, we remind you that accepting the validity of your pain is essential to the process of moving through it. If you merely approach it on the physical level by medicating your pain away, blocking it with drugs or cutting off the offending body part, the message from your soul will find another avenue of expression. Your pain will transform but it will not be eliminated. This is not to say that you must deal with the source of pain in its wholeness on the conscious level for the pain to go away. You have enough experience of this to know better. Life is not that black and white. Many issues are affected by minor shifts in attitude that reverberate through the unconscious layers of the self, relieving pressure from which pain comes. Dreams can provide such shifts and you wake a different person who no longer holds the resistance from which the pain springs. We are speaking in the ideal though. We are encouraging you to make the process of change and growth more conscious. Pain will allow you an opportunity to do just that.

Your willingness to address the deeper causes of dis-ease sets up a dimension of your field of being that resonates with and thus attracts a "cure." The deeper meanings in your pain are drawn to the surface to the degree to which you are willing to allow them. Your openness to the information and your faith that it will be resolved, speeds the process of making your soul's agenda in this painful experience come to fruition. When there is resistance to this process, the belief that you are NOT safe in this world is showing strongly. Hold fast to the knowledge of a benevolent universe of your own creation and move through your pain and fear instead of trying to step around it or block it off.

Referring once more to our friend here, as he explored the anger which flares from his perception of being dependent, he began to connect to links to other aspects of his past. It became clear to him that while dependency was an issue attached to his relationship to his mother, the anger which now typifies his response (anger which is repressed and fuels his stomach pain) is connected to other sources. By not attempting to address even the emotional issues behind his pain one dimensionally by focusing on dependency alone, he allowed these associated feelings to bubble to the surface.

First came the deep and acute pain of his internalization of his own inadequacy which was often pointed out to him by his father and one brother. He owned that perception so fully that it became central to his life. In fact, his first marriage and much of his early adult life revolved around it. It was not a matter of having had abuse heaped upon him by others but the offering of his own intent by the people drawn into his life. While he continued to assign blame to others for the reality he thus experienced, he remained locked into it. Taking back responsibility for creating the experience has opened up the possibility of redefining it. Now he has become more deeply aware of the roots in his past. The anger he held onto constructed a life experience that supported his feelings. Accepting that creative role, he went deeper to explore his early relationships. As he explored his relationship to his father, he began to touch the outrage he had felt at the invalidation he perceived himself receiving and then internalized. He felt again an anger which earlier he had not, and in fact, believed he could not, express openly. He was just a child when he experienced his father's disapproval and as a child, he learned to disengage emotionally, withholding his anger and venting it elsewhere, neither fully nor effectively.

Next, he made the connection between the anger in his life and his experience of power from both ends of the continuum. He had felt dis-empowered by his father's disapproval and his intimidation in the face of his all-powerful parent. In the face of other people's anger he has come to repeatedly feel powerless and inadequate once more, just like the child taken over his father's knee. He has seen himself unable to stand up to anyone's anger, no matter what they, as individuals, might represent to him. He has learned to become paralysed and withdraw, withholding his own outrage at the insults to his integrity he might perceive.

Like all internal conflicts, the resolution requires a two pronged approach. The passive, receptive side of the equation is to accept each manifestation of anger wholeheartedly, not taking responsibility for the experience of others, therefore not internalizing and sharing in their anger. By staying open and vulnerable in the face of anger, he can defuse it and drain the energy from the emotions around him. Turning the other cheek in this way takes far more courage than fighting back and becoming outraged and self righteous. The result, though, is that the feelings or actions of others have no power over him except for the power he confers to them. He can simply live and let live.

For such a stance, of course, he must be willing to express the active side of the equation. Then, he will be expressing, without reservation, what is true for him in the moment. He has been as fearful of his own anger as he has been of the rage of others. He has defined anger as unholy and so he must tar himself with the same brush he uses on others. His fear is what draws angry people into his life in the first place. The self-loathing that is so strongly attached to anger in his inner life can take over his experience in the moment and turn all his efforts to be happy to doggy doo. For him, anger, both his own and that of others, has been the yardstick he has used to measure his own worth and growth as an emotional and spiritual man. It has been a pretty good two-edged sword all things considered. Now, however, as his respect for happiness and pleasure increases, he is coming to know it to be time to let go of this particular tool.

With practice, he can learn to express what is true for him, in the face of anger, in safety. He can discover that his own anger will not hurt him or others. He just needs practice. The result of his practice will be a lessening of the energetic holding back of his rage which now offers power to his physical dis-ease. Being dependent, or perceiving himself as such, overwhelms him emotionally and that produces strong waves of anger. These waves of intense feeling are held back all too often for comfort and he clenches on all levels. He comes screaming to a halt mentally, focusing hard on control of his thoughts. He won't willingly let any of them out of the bag until he stops seeing red. His emotions threaten to carry him away into the rage and he grips them ever tighter to prevent that. Finally he clenches his stomach muscles with enough force and holds them for enough duration to force the acid in his stomach to spurt upwards. All this is so fast and so unconscious that he feels nearly nothing until the heartburn begins. By then, of course, stopping the flow is pretty difficult. He makes the extreme effort to release the tension and catch the feelings which preceded the clenching but they are as elusive as looking for his retina in the background of his vision.

************************************************

Stepping back into the abstract, life springs forth from the interplay of two primordial desires and not just one. The urge to live is always teamed with the urge to die. The urge to live appears more prominent in the three dimensional world of manifestation but the opposite flow is always present as well. Within human lives, the oscillation from the one drive to the other allows you to play the hand you are dealt and then analyse and dissect the play. It is a movement and a rest. Neither flow is more real nor more important or sacred than the other. You create what you perceive as trouble in life by resisting the flow back into spirit. This urge to die is vital to your existence. It is the essence of acquiescence to the Will of God, the flow into and out of life. Divine release is the most powerful attribute of spirit that you can aspire to. It is also a giant step into the unknown, so it is terrifying no matter how evolved your consciousness may be.

At the root of every choice you make in life there is a decision made to live and affirm life, or to die and defy death. We refer, by the word choice, not to the big decisions that you always notice such as what to eat for dinner or what to throw on for clothing. We refer to the choice to feel this way or that, to think this thought or that one, to breathe your next breath or not. These choices, in the moment, are entirely accessible to your conscious awareness but you don't always notice them. Practice paying attention to your own mind and feelings. It is in the moment that the opportunity for sweeping change in your life will be found. You must be present to participate in such change and help to choose its direction. Change will happen, even if you are not aware of the choices you are making right now. Such change will be in the direction set by your deepest thoughts and feelings. Promoting your own healing will be ever so much easier if you are consciously aware in the moment. We have harped on this point a bit but only to emphasize its importance. The willingness to be consciously aware is far greater an accomplishment than the act of being consciously aware. It takes more courage to face and accept your own self than it takes to live within it. With each moment of such choice, you face and deal with the conflicting beliefs about what you deserve. These often opposing beliefs do battle within your consciousness, selecting for you what to be aware of and what to suppress. You have the capacity for infinite awareness built right into your beingness. Accepting your divinity is the key to unlocking that awareness. You can imagine that there is a lot of ground to cover between the human you and the divine you.

So, how to apply these concepts to the healing journey? Accept your pain as your own creation, the result of choice made in every moment. Make a new choice and repeat that choice over and over until it becomes an automatic assumption. If your new choice is conflicted still, you will eventually be faced with a new symptom. That is why taking drugs or having surgery seem to work but do not mark the end of illness or pain. Such acts hold many conflicting beliefs about who you are. Still, your new choice will inevitably lead you forward. If you should make a choice to become your divine self, not just with lip service or reservations, but wholly so, you will be healed fully and immediately. "It's a miracle!" So, if your are not fully healed right now, acknowledge that you still have conflicting desires and beliefs and let's go looking for them.

************************************************

Enter a meditative state, relaxed but fully awake. Feel a flow of power from the centre of the Earth come into your physical body through the root chakra at the base of your spine. Picture a vortex of red light reaching its finest point there at the root and spilling its red light throughout your body, filling it to the tips of the fingers and toes. Let that warm energy expand throughout you and spill out into the air around you. Widen your focus to be aware of the entire volume of you so filled. Acknowledge this energy as the perfection of physicality, the rightness of being in a physical body, your right to live within the Earth. Accept this flow into every cell and bathe them in its warmth. With each inhale, draw more of this life force into your body, expanding with it as it fills you. With each exhale let the light be sent out through your skin to be shared by all of creation. Let it go, knowing you do not own its healing power and that there is enough to go around. Let it go and expand along with it.

Continue your focus on this flow, letting part of your awareness hold the images and feelings. With another portion of your awareness, begin to tune into the part of the body which is the focus of dis-ease. As you tune in, use the feeling of the warm red light to anchor your attention and bathe the area with this light. Open yourself to this source of pain. Closing it off from your awareness is what brought you to this pass in the first place. Accept the rightness of this experience. Your body has been holding a message for you for some time now. Listen intently for that message but do not be attached to hearing it right away. Do not try to guess what it is. If it was easy for you to hear, you would not have blocked it off to the point of pain. Listening now will be an act of opening to the truth of yourself. This will set up a pattern in your heart and mind, bringing the answers you seek to the surface.

As you linger here with your attention focused on your physical body, open yourself to the flow of love and acceptance inherent in the warm red light. Let every cell bathe in that loving flow. In the days and weeks to follow, you will want to offer such loving thoughts and feelings to your body. You will want to act on those thoughts and feelings by offering love to your body in whatever ways you define that. Let your imagination roam the possibilities as you hold your attention steadily on the body part that you desire to heal. Imagine offering your body good food, exercise that is playful and joyful, loving touch, trained attention from the health practitioners of your choice and so on. Then, let your imagination roam over the results of being well and truly healed. Feel the strength and robust vitality return to your body as you bathe it in loving light. You are offering a new mission to your cells that reflects your choice to be healthy and healed. Repetition makes it possible for you to accept that new mission as your choice and your due.

************************************************

In the days that follow, begin to turn your attention to the feeling of health and vitality which already exists within your body. At any given time, billions of cells in your physical home are functioning perfectly and experiencing the joy of being alive. Share in that joy as often as you can remember to. What you focus on grows, so begin to focus on how much health you do have to enjoy right now. Refuse to worry about your dis-ease and your pains. Refuse to let them stop you from living fully and loving your life. Your illness is a perfect manifestation after all. It does not threaten you in any real way. Even death is not the enemy. You are an infinite and eternal being. Therefore, do not let such a small portion of your experience rule your life. Choose right now and in every right now, who you want to be and how you want to feel. With practice, that repeated choice will begin to fill your experience and your health will be completely renewed.

Unlike most other facets of human existence, health issues are so immediate that the frustrations and failure simply are not to be ignored. Even if you choose to live with pain year in and year out, feeling like a victim of your own body, you rarely ever lose awareness of your pain the way you can forget being poor or lonely or overworked. Such a great motivator for change! This can be the most exquisite life issue through which to learn the basics of reality creation. If you study the instances of remarkable cures, spontaneous remissions and miracle healings, you will find that a fundamental shift in attitude has always occurred. Cancer patients decide to live in the face of the death sentence of their diagnosis. The successful surgery survivor believes himself cured of his ailment and chooses to honour that cure by changing his lifestyle. The recipient of faith healing believes without question in the power of God to forgive and heal and so acquiesces totally. Of course, if these cases resume the choices which produced the pain in the first place, they will again find their way to disease at some point.

For you, the fundamental choice we discussed at some length in "Your World is a Metaphor" is a fine place to begin to change your experience of reality. Choose whether or not to believe that Life Itself is inherently GOOD. By choosing that life, and all experience springing from life, is inherently good, you create a foundation for your existence which supports happiness, abundance and love. Deciding that life is neutral or predatorial or riddled with chaos pretty much makes health, happiness, abundance and love into myths attainable by chance only. That is not very encouraging. You may have good reasons to make such a hopeless choice, of course. We suggest you make it a conscious choice and subject it to constant review. From this choice, all of your experience is built.

Beginning at this foundation, begin to choose how you want to feel. Become as familiar as you can with how it feels to be healthy and full of energy. Memorize all of your experience of this state so that you can conjure it at will. Even when you have pain, look throughout your body for this feeling of well being. It will be there somewhere, we assure you of that. As you focus on feeling this joy in being alive, wherever in your body it exists in the moment, remind yourself that your focus alone is making it grow. As you practice this simple focusing, thoughts will bubble up that will argue with this premise. Those thoughts may be about how silly such an approach is or how you deserve to be ill or you don't deserve to heal Your experience of this will be unique to you. Systematically replace such thoughts with how you truly wish to feel. Let the joy of being alive fill the inner space that such negative thoughts occupy.

Health, like love and wealth and fulfilment of all kinds, is a state of being. It is yours to choose and to create. The power to change your state of being is yours alone. It is not up to others to change it, not even God. It is and has always been your creation. Consider what you really want to experience in life and choose to have that, unhesitatingly. Take on your creative power and build your life as you see fit.
